This is where things get genuinely different. A home move is full of irregular shapes and emotional weight: wardrobes, mattresses, that mirror nobody remembers buying, and boxes labelled ‘kitchen??’. It needs care, but mostly a strong back and good packing technique.
An office move is a different beast. You’re often dealing with:
• IT equipment that needs to be disconnected, transported, and reconnected in the exact right order (nobody wants Bob from Accounts ringing on day one because his monitor won’t turn on)
• Confidential documents and archives that need secure handling, not just ‘shove it in a box’
• Furniture that must be dismantled, labelled, and rebuilt to fit a completely different floor plan
• Desks, chairs, and partitions that often need to go into storage short-term while a new space is being fitted out
It’s less about wrapping the sofa and more about running a small, time-sensitive military operation with a laptop bag instead of a rifle.
The Paper Trail Nobody Talks About
Here’s a quietly huge difference: what happens to the stuff you don’t take with you.
When you move house, unwanted items usually go to charity, a tip run, or a relative who ‘could use that lamp, actually.’
When a business moves, old paperwork and electronics can’t just go in a skip, data protection rules apply.
